Sticks (Walking Sticks) and canes both from found wood and driftwood are in high demand. I spend anywhere from 25 to 50 hours on each piece and finish them with a single coat of tung oil rubbed in with 3000 grit sandpaper. After that I add 2 coats of urethane to protect from the weather.
Driftwood canes and walking sticks are very special with loads of character. While walking the beach and passing up on dozens of sticks, I finally spot that one the grabs my attention because of its special shape and unique coloring. My found wood sticks and canes come from a variety of woods found locally and include: Holly, Mountain Ash, Wild Cherry, Apple Wood (3 different types), Birch, Rhodendron, Hazelnut, Japanese Plum, Alder and Sequoia
For those of you that have been fortunate enough to have received one of my sticks or canes as a gift, consider yourself lucky as they are no longer free.
Aside from being a wonderful fashion statement, they are great for travel. When you are at the terminal gate waiting for your flight to board and they ask if anyone needs help or extra time, HOLD UP YOUR CANE!! You and your travelling companion can board before the rest which gives you ample overhead bin space for your carry-on.
The shillelagh, originally from Ireland, is traditionally made from oak, ash, crabtree, hazel or knotty blackthorn. My shillelaghs are made from Japanese Plum or Mountain Ash.
